Idea for reflection 10

Are the younger members well accepted within the Conferences? Do they suffer problems in adapting? If so, are there channels by which to overcome these problems?

Yes, we are well accpeted within the Conferences. The senior members take care of us, guide us and teach us a lot of things. We don't feel difficulties in adapting.

The young members are were accepted. Some of them can not adapt easily because of the difficulties and the absent of their youth colleagues. To attract the youths in the work of charity, charity should be emphasized in all level of catholic educational system with S.S.V.P as e.g.

At first they are well accepted and given very god recognition within the conferences but in few days time that recognition diminishes. Little by little confrontations arise within the two generations and finally in most of the cases youth have to leave the conferences. There are situations in recent past on youth leaving the conferences due to confrontations between their respective Spiritual Directors. The main reason we feel that we suffer in adapting due to the generation gap. To overcome this I know about a conference where youth functioning separately but under the guidance of the conference. Personally I believe it depend on the personality of both parties, where one should be able to listen to the other and specially understand the other.

Young members are well accepted in their conferences although most of them feel that there are times that their opinions are not taken seriously. As an old adage in Kannada which says “Old roots with new leaves make the tree Vibrant”, Youth should understand that they derive their strength and stability from senior Vincentians and convince the seniors on validity of their point of view by working closer to them.
Youth conferences are a way of providing comfort to younger members. The average age range of the senior conference members is 50-75. Most of the senior members have retired form there jobs and have time to their disposal. However, youth members are students or working youth. Hence, youth conferences function on Sundays which is a weekly off. Whereas, senior conferences have their meetings and carry out their Vincentian work during the week.

Generally, young members are well accepted in their conferences. As a matter of fact, young membership throughthe Youth Secretariat in Trinidad is something that is pushed for. However, when it comes to the actual works where interaction with older people exist, there is confrontation and differences of opinion becaus eyoung people look for changing the ways in which we do things while old people tend to want to stick with the old ways. As a result, the young people become disenchanted and eventually find themselves not fully committed, they miss meetings and are afraid to contribute. My question is how can we close the gap to allow for a synergistic relationship between the two age groups? Can we find ways of replicating our founder’s group where seniors (adults) (Sr. Rosalie Rendu and Emmanuel Bailly) played an integral role in guiding decision-making and not dictating e.g. during decision-making.
