The new forms of suffering of our era include wide spread of unemployment and underemployment.
They include people who are lack of caring by the others, especailly the elders; immigrators from mainland China who are weak to survive in the society.
Here in Sri Lanka the situation is worsen due to the civil war which is going on for nearly three decades. Sri Lankans too suffer from what Denis and Neil had mentioned. Especially with underemployment and I believe I don’t need to specially mention about the situations in the refugee camps. Sri Lankans suffer from the uncertainty of their lives too. Again this is due to the war and I wish this will disappear when the war is over.
I am commenting from Zimbabwe in Africa, and i really cant say we have new forms of suffering but the same old forms of suffering are the ones still there but affecting a greater number of people. The people hence a suffering a lot from hunger, poor shelter, not affording to send their children to school or provide adequate school material like uniforms and books. In my view the suffering has been worsened due to the political and economic situation in our country where we have a record inflation of over 150000%. It is really a challenging situation for all our conferences trying to help all the people in need.
The new forms of poverty include university graduats who are underemployed, persons in remote areas who are not exposed to basic needs, e.g. water and who are exposed to verbal and sexual abuse, rape, child molest and little or no means of transportation, resulting in poor education opportunities. Other forms of poverty in this era include those ersons who, because of their place in the social setting are not given opportunities for improved living standards.
The old forms of poverty continuously make news,which are;unemployment,underprivileged and voiceless in the community,materially and spiritually destitude,physically and mentallty handicarpped,drug addicts, ignorant and doubtful,marginalized,neglected,harbourless,etc,etc.

Substandard housing for new immigrants
Minimal wages.
Children neglect- parents away working long hours.
Elderly -loneliness
Substandard academic achievement- children whose parents spend long hours in employment.
siblings raising and mentoring children as opposed to parents.
Problems with nutrition/obesity in low income earning families
unemployment of the youth and neglect of the elderly and HIV
Suffering on an emotional level - loneliness, depression are the forms of suffering which have not been previously acknowledged this can be best explained as “Solitude among multitudes”. We as Vincentians do try to meet the material demands of the adoptees but rarely fulfil their need for compassion. An adoptee who has lost his/her parents is a good example. We might pay for the education of the child but we do not help much on an emotional front. Some other sufferings that we can list would be Social Inequalities, fight for basic rights and amenities and people living in urban areas not being sensitive towards the rural issues.
